Journal Club For April 2021: Variational phase-field modeling of brittle and cohesive fracture

The Journal Club for April 2021 presents a concise review of the so-called variational phase-field fracture theory for brittle and cohesive fracture. Topics include the pioneering work of Griffith on brittle fracture in 1920, Barenblatt's cohesive zone model in 1959, to Marigo/Francfort's variational formulation of Griffith's brittle fracture 78 years later and the Bourdin's phase-field regularisation of MF's model. Also discussed is recent models for cohesive fracture, the role of the length scale parameter, solver for the coupled PDEs and some applications.

On the Effect of a Rate-Dependent Work of Adhesion in the Detachment of a Dimpled Surface

AbstractPatterned surfaces have proven to be a valuable design to enhance adhesion, increasing hysteresis and the detachment stress at pull-off. To obtain high adhesive performance, soft materials are commonly, used, which easily conform to the countersurface, such as soft polymers and elastomers. Such materials are viscoelastic; i.e., they show rate-dependent properties. Here, the detachment of two half spaces is studied, one being flat and the other having a dimple in the limit of short range adhesion and a power law rate-dependent work of adhesion, as observed by several authors.

Li-ion distribution and diffusion-induced stress calculations of particles using an image-based finite element method

The realistic particles in lithium batteries have unique microstructures, which should be determined in the analysis of chemo-mechanical behaviors during charge/discharge cycles. In this paper, an image-based (IBFEM) is developed to investigate the volume expansion, Li-ion distribution, and diffusion-induced stress (DIS) of a realistic particle.

A tribute to Arthur Peter “Art” Boresi

Dear Colleagues,

We mourn the death of Arthur Peter “Art” Boresi, professor emeritus of civil and architectural engineering at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, and formerly of theoretical and applied mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who died February 15, 2021, at age 96 at Laramie.

Dr John Biggins (supervisor) and Prof Mark Warner FRS (co-supervisor) are searching for a talented theorist with interests in mechanics and geometry to work on the design of soft liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) machines. The studentship is part of a new Marie Sklodowska-Curie training network called storm-bots, which will encompass 13 students across Europe working on the design and creation soft LCE machines. The soft, anisotropic materials of the project, liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and glasses, contract along their director on heating/illumination.
